EN: Presented as part of the group exhibition circles, squares, moments, for, 48, hours, curated by Canberk Akcal at KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art within 48 Stunden Neukölln, The Shortest Shadow unfolds in the monumental Kesselhaus space. The site-specific installation consists of a three-metre-high circular scaffolding structure partially covered with a newly developed series of dyed and painted textiles, performing a delicate equilibrium of holding and falling. The work’s title borrows from philosopher Alenka Zupančič’s reflections on Nietzsche’s concept of splitting—when “one turns into two”—evoking processes of transformation and duality.

Accompanying the sculpture is Dorniak’s 24-minute audio piece, porously anchored in the peripheries of time, created in collaboration with sound artist Monty Callaghan for CollActive Materials in 2023. Offered in both German and English, the composition connects the interior and exterior of the structure, resonating through the porous architecture of KINDL’s Kesselhaus and inviting visitors to experience sound as spatial movement.

The Shortest Shadow continues Dorniak’s exploration of material tension, embodied temporality, and the porous relationship between structure and collapse. The work emerged through close collaboration with the exhibition’s curatorial and production team, reflecting collective processes of morphing and planting—an approach that defines Dorniak’s dialogical and site-responsive practice.

From 28th-30th June, the KINDL Kesselhaus hosts the group exhibition "circles, squares, corners, moments, for, 48, hours", as part of 48 Stunden Neukölln . Inspired by this year's festival theme "urbane stille”, the exhibition questions the relationship between the noise of the city and how information is circulated in Berlin. Moving around performances, physicality and moments, the exhibition will create a space, where our attachment to a metro-pole becomes more visible. With works by, a.o. Dana Lorenz, Esper Postma, Gisele Gonon, Gosia Lehmann, Hannah Schillinger, Hauck Pluempe, Lena Memrich, Monika Dorniak, Olga Hohmann, Theresa Reiwer.

DE: Präsentiert im Rahmen der Gruppenausstellung circles, squares, moments, for, 48, hours, kuratiert von Canberk Akcal im KINDL – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst als Teil von dem Festival 48 Stunden Neukölln, entfaltet sich The Shortest Shadow im monumentalen Raum des Kesselhauses. Die ortsspezifische Installation besteht aus einer drei Meter hohen kreisförmigen Gerüststruktur, die teilweise mit einer neu entwickelten Serie von gefärbten und bemalten Textilien bedeckt ist. Diese Materialien inszenieren ein feines Gleichgewicht zwischen Halten und Fallen. Der Titel des Werkes bezieht sich auf die Überlegungen der Philosophin Alenka Zupančič zu Nietzsches Konzept der Spaltung – dem Moment, „wenn eines zu zwei wird“ – und ruft Prozesse von Transformation und Dualität hervor.

Die Skulptur wird von Dorniaks 24-minütigem Audiostück porously anchored in the peripheries of time begleitet, das 2023 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Soundkünstler Monty Callaghan für CollActive Materials entstand. Die Komposition, verfügbar in Deutsch und Englisch, verbindet das Innere und Äußere der Struktur, klingt auf Kopfhörern durch die poröse Architektur des Kesselhauses und lädt Besucher:innen dazu ein, Klang als räumliche Bewegung wahrzunehmen.

The Shortest Shadow setzt Dorniaks Erforschung von materieller Spannung, verkörperter Zeitlichkeit und der durchlässigen Beziehung zwischen Struktur und Zusammenbruch fort. Die Arbeit entstand in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem kuratorischen und produktionstechnischen Team der Ausstellung und spiegelt kollektive Prozesse des Formens und Verwachsens wider – ein Ansatz, der Dorniaks dialogische und ortsbezogene Praxis charakterisiert.

Vom 28. bis 30. Juni präsentiert das KINDL Kesselhaus die Gruppenausstellung „circles, squares, corners, moments, for, 48, hours“ im Rahmen von 48 Stunden Neukölln.
Inspiriert vom diesjährigen Festivalthema „urbane stille“ hinterfragt die Ausstellung die Beziehung zwischen dem Lärm der Stadt und der Art und Weise, wie Informationen in Berlin zirkulieren.
Durch Performances, Körperlichkeit und fragile Momente entsteht ein Raum, in dem unsere Bindung an die Metropole sichtbarer wird. Mit Arbeiten von u.a. Dana Lorenz, Esper Postma, Gisele Gonon, Gosia Lehmann, Hannah Schillinger, Hauck Pluempe, Lena Memrich, Monika Dorniak, Olga Hohmann, Theresa Reiwer.
